Family Coverage
Family coverage is insurance coverage that covers not only the primary insured but also their dependents. Typical family coverage covers the insured, their spouse, and any dependents living at the same address. Insurance companies define dependents in a variety of ways. Any child or step-child under the age of 18 is considered a dependent. An ailing parent of the insured who is in the same house and depends on the insured for medical care can also be considered a dependent. A child who is over 18 and is disabled or otherwise unable to live independently is another form of dependent. In recent years some insurance companies allow a same sex partner to be covered as opposed to a spouse, however not all carriers provide that coverage.
